WHEELCHAIR PHOTOGRAPHERS

I'm still interested in connecting with other disabled photogs. I see there are a few of us out there and I just want to exchange tips & tricks. I volunteer for a wildlife refuge in Oklahoma and I'm having trouble shooting some of the animals and birds. Does anyone have any suggestions? It's hard to sneak up on animals in a power chair.

Cattle Guard

While shooting a bicycle race at the refuge one of the bikers got cross ways with a cattle guard and flipped, bike and all. For those who don't know, a cattle guard is a series of metal bars put across the road with about 6 inches between each and 6 inches down into the road in order to keep the animals contained.

The good thing was to see all the bikers stop and come back to help their fellow biker. People in cars brought umbrellas to help shade the injured. All in all people are at their best when things are at their worst. I thank all you volunteers for helping those in need.

My Setup

The base of my tripod was given to me by a fellow "QuadTog". The metal base is roughly 12" by 12". I'm not sure about the metal tube's dimensions as I did't make it. The whole base is about 3lbs. The next step is to find a tripod thats head will hold the wieght of the lens you're usng. I went through 2 tripods before I found the right one. Once you have the tripod you want just raise it up as high as it will go. Then cut off the tripod pipe at the base. Insert the pipe into the tube on the base and thats pretty much it. I have a hole drilled close to the base on the tube so I can insert a metal screw to keep the tripod pipe from coming out.

Now you have a tripod that will sit on your lap or you can set it on the ground. I hope this helps and inspires some of you out there. I just like the fact that it's not attached to my chair so I can move it where I need it.

Beware of the EZ Lock System

Those of us with an EZ Lock post under our wheelchairs need to be careful. Those darn little posts will bring you to a dead stop if you're going full speed down a dirt road and hit a rock. All your equipment keeps moving forward...onto the ground. Sometimes I've even gotten stuck on top of a rock, unable to move. You just have to hope you can shake yourself off the rock. Make sure you have your cell phone with you!
